Great article! Unbelievable that the Canadian writers union told you it’s not a matter pertaining to them and that you could contact them about matters directly related to writers and writing. Thanks for sharing this!

What a shame the the MSM are dependant on government handouts (bribes) to be able to survive and now are joined by the previously brave observers of the human condition in taking back-handers! All attempts at reasonable and well reasoned appeals are given short shrift; but what's the alternative? Surely not compliance! It seems that the general intelligence of the majority of humanity has taken a steep dive from Tweedledum to Tweedledummer!

In Canada it's not just the media that is effectively bought and paid for by the government, it's most of our writers whose silence during Covid has been deafening.

Well done, Art. I did not even realize you had submitted a motion for the 2021 TWUC AGM. I would have supported as a seconder. But I guess it didn't even get that far. You wrote a great letter to TWUC, making the case for it. Astounding and horrifically disappointing that TWUC's reply was "this is not a matter for the Writers’ Union of Canada." OMFG! Free speech and constitutional right to express same is not a matter for TWUC? Really? Since when? Why have I been paying them annual dues for more than 30 years????

Exactly. All your money is being funnelled into this back-and-forth legal battle with the government over the 2012 Copyright Modernization Act. That is, what isn't being wasted on so-called "equity" programs. I only just got my five-year membership pin and I've had it. I can't continue to support the Writers' Union.

Powerful stuff sir but don't fall for the McCarthy witchhunt b.s. History has vindicated him.

If by that you mean that Communism was a genuine threat to the West at the time of the McCarthy hearings, I think that's backed by history. But McCarthy's crusade became a paranoid obsession when he went after authors and Hollywood scriptwriters, often on the flimsiest of evidence. This is historically what always happens with every crusade: the innocent suffer along with the guilty.
